Andrew Bob Johnny

Statistician General

Profile

Mr Andrew Bob Johnny was appointed Statistician General of Statistics Sierra Leone (Stats SL) in May 2023, bringing over 20 years of expertise in census planning, geospatial data systems, and national statistical development.

He has played a central role in the implementation of Sierra Leone’s 2004 and 2015 Population and Housing Censuses, and pioneered the integration of GPS and geospatial analysis into national data collection systems. As former Director of Censuses and GIS, he led capacity-building efforts across government agencies, promoted data accessibility, and strengthened international and donor partnerships.

Mr Johnny has represented Sierra Leone at numerous global forums, including the African Census Symposiums and UN Statistical Commission meetings. He has also contributed to electoral boundary delimitation and the development of the country’s national poverty map. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded a UNFPA scholarship and, in March 2025, was unanimously elected Rapporteur of the United Nations Statistical Commission.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Geography from Fourah Bay College and an MSc in Geo-information Management from the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), Netherlands.
