Hon. Julius Daniel Mattai

Profile
Mr. Julius Daniel Mattai currently serves as the Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Sierra Leone. He brings over three decades of technical and leadership experience in mineral exploration, environmental management, and the governance of extractive industries.
Prior to his appointment, Mr. Mattai served as the Director General of the National Minerals Agency (NMA) from 2019 to 2023, where he provided strategic oversight and regulatory leadership in managing Sierra Leone’s mineral resources. From 2013 to 2019, he was Geodata Manager at the NMA, playing a critical role in building and maintaining national mineral databases and geoscientific systems that support evidence-based decision-making in the sector.
Mr. Mattai holds a Master of Science in Geology and Exploration for Mineral Deposits from Ukraine (1992) and a Master of Science in Environmental and Earth Resources Management from the United Kingdom (2001). His academic and professional background reflects a strong blend of technical expertise and policy insight, which he now brings to the Ministry’s mandate of advancing sustainable mineral development for national growth.
