Profile
Dr. Austin Demby is the Minister of Health and Sanitation of the Republic of Sierra Leone, bringing to the role extensive global experience in public health, clinical microbiology, and health systems leadership.
Dr. Demby holds a Doctorate in Clinical Microbiology from the University of London and a Master’s degree in Public Health from the University of Michigan, USA. He began his professional journey in 1980 as a research scientist at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), where he played a pivotal role in infectious disease surveillance and control.
Between 1987 and 1989, Dr. Demby served as Country Director of the CDC field station in Sierra Leone, where he led critical health research and epidemic response initiatives during a formative period in the country’s public health sector. His leadership contributed significantly to capacity building, disease monitoring, and the development of national health strategies.
With a career spanning decades, Dr. Demby has combined technical expertise with strategic leadership in various global and national contexts. His experience encompasses designing and implementing health systems, promoting evidence-based health policies, and championing equitable access to healthcare.
As Minister of Health and Sanitation, Dr. Demby continues to advocate for strengthened health systems, improved service delivery, and resilient public health infrastructure. His vision is to transform Sierra Leone’s health sector through innovation, inclusivity, and strategic investment in human capital and resources.
